The Council for Cooperative Health Insurance in Saudi Arabia has launched an initiative to update the Unified Insurance Medicines Guide, aiming to enhance patient safety and improve access to essential medicines. This update is part of a broader effort to streamline treatment processes, promote effective insurance coverage, and ensure that medications used are both safe and cost-effective.
The guide, which covers the Essential Benefit Package for employees in the private sector, is regularly updated based on the latest scientific evidence. This ensures the inclusion of effective medicines, supporting the rational use of medications and standardizing pharmaceutical practices across the private healthcare sector. The goal is also to help reduce medication costs, ultimately improving the healthcare system’s efficiency.
In addition, the Council is working on the Medical Devices Assurance Guide, which is designed to create a comprehensive regulatory framework for medical devices. This will ensure that medical devices are used appropriately, in line with international standards, and are covered under the basic medical benefits package. The project aims to promote fair and affordable access to medical devices, especially for chronic disease management, while ensuring patient safety.
These updates are part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to improve the quality and affordability of healthcare services, adhering to international healthcare practices.
