The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) levied a €4.75 million ($4.98 million) penalty on Netflix for failing to properly disclose its data usage practices to customers between 2018 and 2020.
Following a 2019 investigation, the DPA determined that Netflix’s privacy policy lacked sufficient clarity regarding the specific ways in which the streaming service collected and utilized user data. The authority also found that Netflix did not adequately respond to customer inquiries about the types of personal information it gathered, marking a breach of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Despite having updated its privacy statement and improving customer communication in response to the investigation, Netflix has challenged the fine. The company has not provided further comments on the matter.
